BSY Cultural Arts, Geylang East Home for the Aged and Singapore Artistes Association jointly present the Series of Activities of Filial Piety & Ancestral Respect at Kallang Theatre, Singapore on 5-6 April 2019.

Why do we offer memorial ceremonies during Qing Ming, or TombSweeping Day? Everyone can be traced to a personal lineage of ancestors. Thus, the practice of memorial offerings to our ancestors is an inextricably linked activity. The basis of the noble Chinese Traditional Culture lies indeed in filial piety and ancestral respect. Therefore, it is essential to advance this aspect of the Culture. Filial piety and ancestral respect encompass loyalty; filiality; respect; and ancestry.

Loyalty Being loyal to our Motherland, our country of residence and our family; being conscientious of our duty Filiality Exhibiting filial respect to our parents, our elders and our
country
Respect Honouring our parents, our elders and our teachers Ancestry Ancestors and xian zu; elders and seniors; living and formless xian zu

Gan En Being grateful and taking cognizance of all who have rendered assistance to us, of whom we do know or do not even know, including the formless beings. Let us requite with a gushing spring of gratefulness for even the tiniest droplet of assistance received.

Note The Chinese term of “先祖”, or xian zu, encompasses our elders, and our relatives who have passed on. They are of one and the same body with us.

How do we ensure that our relatives who have passed on are able to stay in a state of bliss and peace? How do we proceed in gaining the protection of our ancestors? That would encompass filial piety and ancestral respect, and the embodiment of all, which is Light!

The ability of our ancestors to enter into the Light is also a function of our own deeds. This is about rendering services to the peoples and through these, illustrate Singapore Culture, civility and wisdom. It should also extend from the xian zu culture of filial piety and ancestral respect to the love of country, Motherland and country of residence, and to cherishing the spirit of rendering services to the masses. The Grandstage Performance with its large-scale presentation would surely be captivating for the audience, and it would indeed be a great loss to miss it!

We are greatly delighted that the CEO of Business China and Member of Parliament for Macpherson SMC, Ms Tin Pei Ling, has kindly accepted our invitation to grace this grand event. We are also very honoured to have the services of Mr Xiong Ji Wen, an Executive Director of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Closing Ceremony, and now the Cultural Principal Director of BSY Cultural Arts, in producing the show and raising the standard to an international level.

What is most exhilarating is the Hundred-drums Performance, advocated by Bai Shi Yin Yuan Zhang, that gives a rousing rendition with the fullness of vitality and an abundance of positive energy. The aim of Bai Shi Yin Yuan Zhang in establishing the hundred-drum performance is to expose our children at an early age to the rich heritage of Chinese Traditional Culture, centring on the cultivation of morality and nurturing talents imbued with skills and virtue, thus ensuring a continued stream of human expertise to serve our nation. Raised with the advocating of personal merits as the basis and the placing of priority on filial duty, the children would learn how to express their filial piety to their parents. And through our joint efforts and conveyed via the reverberation of the drums, what is presented to our society is a collective value of the righteousness of the heart; honourable intendedness; and right thought. When the different cultures of countries are embraced, and with a desire to mutually learn from each other, what is manifested is a colourful world with a diverse array of cultures. Let the reverberation of the drums convey the flourishing noble Chinese Traditional Culture and Singapore Culture and may the percussion of the drums ring in a bright future.
